Old teenage hopes left alive at your door;
So this weekend was a long weekend, in a sense a truly long weekend because I got to book out early for Medical Appointment! Which was really good, since I got my clean bill of (dermatological) health and our dear Singapore Gahmen picked up the tab completely. I decided to go for a run after that, which proved rather dumb because the traffic along the roads was choking me with exhaust but when I hit Hwa Chong in 25 minutes (which is rather fast, given that there were 3-4 minutes of waiting for traffic lights), I got to meet Zoe and Jaya and catch up. One of the smaller pleasures of life is really just talking and catching up with friends.

...

I got accepted by NUS Science, which is a relief since I got a bit worried after not hearing from them at all. That's exactly what you get for not submitting except at the very last minute I guess. In a way, I'm glad to be given the chance to study what I really love; it's something that I have been passionate about for years.

While it's not quite the be-all-end-all thing I hoped, at least it's something I can be thankful for and look forward to. Life Sciences it is then!

I'd like to, but I couldn't get in x.x. If I'm still going to do it, it'll have to be via the graduate medical school route!

Congrats! I'll be in your faculty then. Although chances are I'll hardly see you because I'll be stuck in Pharmacy. XD

And better still, two years my senior. My friend Cheryl ([info]de3mental)'s gotten into pharmacy too!

Well, duh. You're a guy. :D

That's good. I'll say hi to her... sometime in the future! XDD Well, at least you want to do science. I've no idea right now whether I want medicine enough to do it in grad school. Frankly, I think that says something about how much I want to do medicine... XD

Ah yes :P. Well I pretty much kissed local medicine at Yong Loo Lin goodbye the very minute I got my grades, so I think I'm spared the pain you all are going through now. (Though yes it pains me more that those accepted are disrupting and will return as 3 bar captains to sit in an aircon office as a medical officer while I slog my guts out x.x). That said, I still want to consider graduate medical school.

It's just something I've always wanted to do really badly I guess, to hell with career prospects.

I'm actually not going through a lot of pain. I've been psyching myself since Day 1 that being a doctor is a pretty shit job until you get to being a senior registrar anyway so yea, it's like, whatever.

Frankly, I like the prospect of being a pharmacist in the US a hell lot more than going to graduate medical school. But then again jobs in the US are shit hard to get nowadays.

I'd stay here, but I want to study in US for GMS. Somehow I think there's a certain attraction to studying medicine, even if I don't practice after all.

I love the study of medicine in itself. I love reading up on medicine and just knowing everything that's going on. The real problem is whether I want to practice or not. Which is why I do think the US system of having medicine as a graduate degree is so much better; I don't think it's really fair to get 18-year-olds to commit themselves to medicine. I really do think that 4 years of college changes your perspective by a whole lot, so it's probably much better to decide if you want to be a doctor after that. Admittedly it's a much longer route.

EXACTLY. Though what I'd like is to do public health policy with the medical degree, though I'm not sure if it's that wise.

What I dislike though, is how people give me really weird looks just because I'll be a 3-4 years behind in my career at the start.

Oh, come on. If I do become a practising pharmacist, people will give me weird looks because apparently I'm not good enough for med school and therefore can only dispense Panadol at Guardian. XDD

Which is probably why most pharmacists go into research. The ones at Guardian just don't get enough respect x.x.

Frankly, anyone in Singapore working in allied healthcare or nursing is just grossly underappreciated. Just look at how we treat nurses.
